Direct-2-Edge (D2E) is Harley's wired IPTV solution that allows operators to economically and effectively distribute video through the DOCSIS interface specification within existing networks.
Harley's D2E solution can be used to economically deploy IPTV over wired HFC architecture. The advantages of IPTV video distribution include: significant flexibility in target device selection and a highly customized and personalized user experience. Additionally, the IP set-top boxes and PCs in the target market help retain the subscriber base and prevent migration to OTT viewing. The deployment of such architecture can also be used to introduce new revenue streams, such as inexpensive targeted advertising aimed at PCs.
The use of D2E transmission for cable IPTV significantly reduces the cost per downstream QAM stream, making a viable business case for cable IPTV for the first time. D2E leverages Harmonic's expertise in video distribution, QAM, and RF to deliver reliable and scalable video streaming applications based on the standard DOCSIS protocol.

D2E is particularly beneficial for hybrid MSOs (Multiple System Operators) that also have xDSL/FTTx networks beyond HFC; by adopting D2E, these operators can deliver a unified service to all subscribers using the same video and service distribution platform, while reusing most of the components for video processing and transmission at the front end.
